Ranging from beginning to advanced analysis techniques, we offer detailed one-on-one theory classes designed for each student’s particular needs. We can tailor these classes in order to pass practical grades of the ABRSM, or to help a student understand the basics of classical and popular music. Music theory provides students with the intellectual side of music.

Our sight-reading class is designed to improve the student’s skills of playing music from the score at first glance. Like any other aspect of playing music, this ability is a skill that can be improved with careful guidance, patience, and practice! The skills gained from this are not only useful in initially reading unfamiliar music, but in quickening the learning process in all of the student’s repertoire, and helping the student to physically map out the piano keyboard without looking at their hands.

For advanced students, this coaching class is designed around studying the art of accompanying other musical instruments such as the violin, cello, voice, etc. at the piano. The class approaches this material in both a practical and a theoretical way, giving the student opportunities to collaborate with other musicians as well as to study in detail the writings from great pianists on the subject of collaboration (Gerald Moore, Martin Katz, and others).

Duet playing can be one of the most important facets of any piano student’s development. In this class, students are paired with other students at their level (or paired with faculty) to enjoy making music collaboratively while learning skills that will also improve their solo playing.

This class is not only great fun, but provides students the chance to perform with others, significantly reducing the level of performance anxiety on stage.

In this class derived from Juilliard’s stellar method of musicianship and ear training, we will provide the student with facility in the use of solfège, interval singing, and basic chordal resolution. Rhythmic training is extensively taught in addition to basic melodic and harmonic score dictation. Each of these skills influence how the student fundamentally understands music as well as how the student internally hears and then interacts with the musical score.
