Group Classes

Our school offers the following extra classes in order to extensively prepare students for their ABRSM practical/music theory examinations or to broaden their exploration of music. Though the regular private lessons cover the basics of music theory, ear training, musicianship, sight-reading, etc., the lesson time is often limited to the study of repertoire rather than on these topics specifically. The following classes have been designed to provide an in-depth look at each particular area of study:

  • Music Theory (beginner-advanced)

  • ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory (see more here)

  • Musicianship (solfège and rhythmic training)

We also offer a range of Group Piano Classes (beginner-intermediate) based on an age range, available from 7-years-old through to adults. These classes can be a cost-effective and enjoyable way of starting out with music lessons amongst peers.

All of our classes are charged at a rate of $25 per hour, and are billed according to the number of weeks in the semester. We have small class sizes of at most 4-6 students per class to ensure good interaction between the students and the teacher.

Class Options

  • Theory Classes

    Ranging from beginning to advanced analysis, we offer theory classes with small class sizes (4-6 students) to help our students understand the basics of the classical and popular music traditions.

    Music theory provides the tools needed for understanding musical harmonies and forms, and gives an appreciation for the craft of composition. It is also an important pre-requisite for precollege or music conservatory study, and should not be neglected in any musician’s education.

  • Lumina and ABRSM

    ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory

    A course specifically designed to help students pass the theory exam for Grade 5, which enables students to access enrollment in the advanced Grades 6-8.

  • Group Piano Classes

    We offer group piano classes divided by age: specifically for the beginner-intermediate levels. They cover the basics of reading, piano techniques, as well as simple music theory that is all necessary for efficient piano study in private lessons.

  • Musicianship Class

    In this class derived from Juilliard’s stellar method of musicianship and ear training, we will provide the student with facility in the use of solfège, interval singing, and basic chordal resolution. Rhythmic training is extensively taught in addition to basic melodic and harmonic score dictation. Each of these skills influence how the student fundamentally understands music as well as how the student internally hears and then interacts with the musical score.
