Join us for a relaxing evening of solo piano music from the French and German classical traditions, presented by Lumina Piano School’s director Mr. Benjamin Dominguez. The first half of the program features the French, in a ravishing set of Variations (Op. 73) by Gabriel Faure along with the easygoing and charming Nocturnes of Francis Poulenc.
The second half comprises two of Ludwig van Beethoven’s vivacious early-period Piano Sonatas: Op. 10 #2 in F Major and the virtuosic Op. 22 in Bb Major.
Candles will be lit, period-relevant paintings will decorate the walls, refreshments will be served, and the entire event is certain to be thoroughly enjoyable!
Recital Program
Gabriel Fauré
Theme et Variations, Op. 73
Austere and in a romantic style reminiscent of Robert Schumann, this is a powerful set of eleven variations on a serious theme, from one of France’s great composers.
Francis Poulenc
Nocturnes, FP 56
Eight brief snapshots of Parisian “night music”: originally stand-alone pieces composed sporadically throughout an eight-year period before being published as a set.
Brief Intermission
Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Sonata in F Major, Op. 10 #2
Three movements, each delightful in their own ways, culminating in a rousing "fugue-ish" finale. This is a precursor to Beethoven's late-period fascination with incorparating fugues and sonatas.
Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Sonata in Bb Major, Op. 22
A four-movement sonata reminiscent of his teacher Joseph Haydn's humorous style, yet with Beethoven's characteristically dramatic edge.
